Street Art @ Kuala Selangor

Amazing what a new coat of paint will do. The former royal town of Kuala Selangor is undergoing a resurgence, and it’s got the street art to prove it.

Every year Malaysian Nature Society Selangor holds Festival Of Wings at Kuala Selangor Nature Park. After it wrapped up, I took the opportunity to wander Kuala Selangor’s Pekan Lama (the old part of town) to see what’s changed.

The old bones of Pekan Lama haven’t fundamentally altered. The biggest transformation has been Masjid Raja Lumu mosque’s glorious glow up, and the area surrounding Malawati Square has been cleared so the jetty (and jump off point to the Sky Mirror sandbank attraction and bioluminescent Blue Tears phenomenon) is visible top passersby. Other than that, the changes have been  surface but in the best possible way.

The square has 2 massive signs for photo ops (meh) and there’s a  series of impressive murals in the laneway between the old town’s two main rows of shoplots.

Thankfully these murals are not just another cynical attempt to lure visitors – there are no angel wings or padlocks here. Phew.

The murals of Laluan Seni Pekan Lama, some of which were contributed by UITM’s Fine Art Rangers (CerakCaraKita) as far back as 2019, have legitimate artistic merit.

They features 2 obvious narratives:  Kuala Selangor’s attractions and traditional past times.  At the time of my visit, some weere still a work in progress. Here’s a sampling. I highly recommend you take a drive and see it for yourself.
